What Is the MPJE?
The MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination) has been the standard pharmacy law exam for nearly 30 years. Despite its name, it is state-specific - each participating state has its own version that tests federal law alongside that particular state's pharmacy regulations.
A passing MPJE score for one state does not satisfy the requirement in another. Moving from one state to another typically means retaking the exam for the new state. This has long been a barrier to multistate licensure.
What Is the UMPJE?
The UMPJE is NABP's answer to that problem. Launched for early adopter states in April 2026, it tests pharmacy law principles that are common across most U.S. jurisdictions - not the specific rules of any one state.
A passing UMPJE score counts in every state that has adopted the exam. As NABP describes it, the UMPJE is designed to "use the commonality of state laws" and support pharmacist license mobility.
The Critical Distinction: What Gets Tested
The UMPJE is not a federal law-only exam - this is one of the most common misconceptions. Per NABP, the exam tests:
- Applicable federal pharmacy law (DEA, FDA, HIPAA, CARA, MATE Act, DSCSA, OBRA '90)
- General principles of state pharmacy law that are broadly shared across most jurisdictions (scope of practice, prescription requirements, dispensing standards, recordkeeping)
It does not test the idiosyncratic rules of individual states. That's what makes the score portable.
The state-specific MPJE tests all of the above plus that individual state's unique regulations - specific board requirements, state-only forms, state-specific timelines.
Which Exam Do You Need?
It depends on the state(s) you're seeking licensure in. Some states are now UMPJE-only. Some are in transition accepting both. Most still require the state-specific MPJE. Some use their own jurisprudence exam entirely (California uses the CPJE, for example).

Can You Use the Same Study Materials?
Largely yes for federal law content. DEA controlled substance rules, HIPAA, CARA, MATE Act, DSCSA, OBRA '90 - these are tested on both exams.
The difference is scope. MPJE prep requires knowing your specific state's rules on top of the federal content. UMPJE prep stays at the federal and broadly uniform state level - no state-specific content needed.
