Which States Require the UMPJE? (Updated June 2026)

The UMPJE rollout is moving fast. Early adopter states began administering the exam in April 2026, with more jurisdictions joining in June 2026 and beyond.

State participation and timelines are actively changing. This page reflects publicly available information as of June 2026 but is not a substitute for official sources. Always verify your specific requirements at nabp.pharmacy/programs/examinations/mpje/uniform-mpje/participating-states/ and your state board of pharmacy website before registering.

The Authoritative Source

NABP maintains the official list of UMPJE participating states and updates it as jurisdictions join. Before registering for any exam:

  1. Check NABP's UMPJE Participating States page
  2. Check NABP's help article: Which states require the MPJE or UMPJE?
  3. Confirm directly with your state board of pharmacy

No third-party page - including this one - can replace those sources for a decision this important.

Early Adopter States (April 2026 Launch)

NABP announced six early adopter boards of pharmacy that began administering the UMPJE in April 2026, ahead of the general rollout:

Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, and Rhode Island

Each of these states has announced a transition away from their state-specific MPJE toward the UMPJE, on timelines that vary by state. Some have fully discontinued the state MPJE. Others are in a transition window accepting both. Check each state board's website for current implementation details:

States Joining June 2026 and Beyond

NABP's general rollout began June 1, 2026, with additional jurisdictions beginning to accept UMPJE applications. States that have announced transitions joining around this window include Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia, with Washington state expected shortly after.

Important notes:

States Still Using the MPJE

The majority of states still require the state-specific MPJE as of mid-2026. This includes many large states. Do not assume your state has adopted the UMPJE without confirming.

NABP maintains a complete list of which states require an NABP-administered law exam and which exam is currently required: nabp.pharmacy/help/which-states-require-the-mpje/

States With Their Own Jurisprudence Exam

A number of states administer their own board-developed jurisprudence exams and are not part of the NABP MPJE/UMPJE program. California uses the CPJE (California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination). Contact those state boards directly for requirements.

Why Are States Adopting the UMPJE?

The traditional MPJE required a separate exam for every state a pharmacist sought licensure in. A pharmacist moving states faced redundant studying, separate fees, and scheduling delays - repeated for every additional license.

The UMPJE removes that barrier. One passing score counts in all states that have adopted it. NABP's stated goal is to support pharmacist license mobility and reduce unnecessary barriers to multistate practice.

UMPJE States FAQs

How many states currently require the UMPJE?

As of June 2026, multiple states have adopted or are transitioning to the UMPJE, with the number growing throughout 2026. The exact count changes as jurisdictions formally join. For the authoritative current list, see nabp.pharmacy/programs/examinations/mpje/uniform-mpje/participating-states/.

Is my state switching from MPJE to UMPJE?

Check the NABP participating states page and your state board website - both listed above. If your state is not yet on the list, it likely still requires the state-specific MPJE.

Can I take the UMPJE if my state doesn't require it yet?

Only if your state has formally adopted the UMPJE. If your state still requires the state-specific MPJE, a UMPJE score would not satisfy that requirement. Confirm with your state board before registering for either exam.

What if I already passed the MPJE for a state that's switching to UMPJE?

A passing MPJE score earned before a state's transition date generally remains valid for licensure in that state. If you're seeking licensure in a new state that now requires the UMPJE, you would typically need to take the UMPJE. Confirm specifics with your state board and NABP.

Will the UMPJE eventually be required in all states?

NABP has designed the UMPJE to support broad adoption, and the number of participating states is growing. However, each state independently decides when and whether to adopt it. There is no announced timeline for universal adoption. Check back as this page is updated when NABP announces new participating states.
