Early Adopter States (April 2026 Launch)

NABP announced six early adopter boards of pharmacy that began administering the UMPJE in April 2026, ahead of the general rollout:

Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, and Rhode Island

Each of these states has announced a transition away from their state-specific MPJE toward the UMPJE, on timelines that vary by state. Some have fully discontinued the state MPJE. Others are in a transition window accepting both. Check each state board's website for current implementation details:

States Joining June 2026 and Beyond

NABP's general rollout began June 1, 2026, with additional jurisdictions beginning to accept UMPJE applications. States that have announced transitions joining around this window include Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia, with Washington state expected shortly after.

States Still Using the MPJE

The majority of states still require the state-specific MPJE as of mid-2026. This includes many large states. Do not assume your state has adopted the UMPJE without confirming.

States With Their Own Jurisprudence Exam

A number of states administer their own board-developed jurisprudence exams and are not part of the NABP MPJE/UMPJE program. California uses the CPJE (California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination). Contact those state boards directly for requirements.

Why Are States Adopting the UMPJE?

The traditional MPJE required a separate exam for every state a pharmacist sought licensure in. A pharmacist moving states faced redundant studying, separate fees, and scheduling delays - repeated for every additional license.

Can I take the UMPJE if my state doesn't require it yet?

Only if your state has formally adopted the UMPJE. If your state still requires the state-specific MPJE, a UMPJE score would not satisfy that requirement. Confirm with your state board before registering for either exam.

What if I already passed the MPJE for a state that's switching to UMPJE?

A passing MPJE score earned before a state's transition date generally remains valid for licensure in that state. If you're seeking licensure in a new state that now requires the UMPJE, you would typically need to take the UMPJE. Confirm specifics with your state board and NABP.

Will the UMPJE eventually be required in all states?
